Speech-Language Department

The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway Speech-Language Department offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient evaluations and treatments for those with communicative, cognitive, and swallowing disorders.

The department is staffed by three Speech-Language Pathologists who are certified by the American Speech-Hearing Association. They have specialized training in one or more of the following: VitalStim therapy, myofunctional therapy and other communication problems arising from neurological disorders.

Patients Served:
  • Preschool/school-aged children Individuals with acquired difficulty in speech, language, memory, cognition, and swallowing secondary to:

  • Stroke (CVA)

  • Brain tumor

  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)

  • Neuromuscular disease (Parkinson’s, ALS, MS)

  • Head and neck cancer
Specific disorders treated include:
  • Aphasia – language disorders which affect understanding, speaking, reading and writing skills.

  • Apraxia – a motor speech disorder which affects voluntary movements of speech muscles.

  • Dysarthria – a speech disorder in which pronunciation is unclear. Volume and rate may also be affected.

  • Dysphagia – difficulty in swallowing food and liquid.

  • Voice disorders – a disturbance in vocal quality, loudness, and pitch.

  • Tracheotomy and laryngectomy – a surgical procedure in which the larynx (voice box) is removed due to cancer.

  • Cognitive-linguistic disorder – impairment in the ability to think and process information.

  • Oromyofunctional disorder (tongue thrust) – contributes to orthodontic and speech problems.

  • Articulation/language disorders – difficulty producing speech especially in preschool and elementary school children.

  • Fluency (stuttering) disorders – impairment in speech fluency characterized by hesitations and repetitions of sounds, syllables words, etc. in children and adults.

  • Modified Barium Swallow

  • VitalStim therapy for swallowing disorders

  • Stroke support group – meets 2nd Thursday of the month at 12:30 –
    2:00 p.m.

Appointments are scheduled Monday through Friday 7:30am – 4:30pm.
