Six Local High School Students Awarded College Scholarships
Rahway – Six local high school students were awarded college scholarships by the Auxiliary of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway and the Gran Centurion Organization to study for careers in the healthcare field.
The five students who received the Shirley Levitzky Scholarship awarded by the Auxiliary of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway are:
Evan Hindes, Westfield High School, who will attend Washington University. Ms. Hindes was a volunteer at RWJ Rahway and Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, a member of the Robert Wood Johnson Health System.
Heather Saurel, Abraham Clark High School, Roselle, who will attend Farleigh Dickinson University. Ms. Saurel plans to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. She is a member of the National Honor Society, as well as a peer leader and mentor.
Megan K. Sawyer, Cranford High School, who will attend Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Ms. Sawyer volunteers at Club Fatima, helping children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Vasyl Nayda, Cranford High School, who will begin a pre-med program at Rutgers University. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Heart to Heart Club, where he organizes activities for pre-school aged children.
Vaduiska Valeus, Abraham Clark High School, Roselle, who will attend Farleigh Dickinson University where she will study biology. She is a member of the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program as well as the National Honor Society. She is a member of the Health Occupations Program, a program that teams Clark students interested in healthcare professions with various hospital departments.
The Gran Centurion’s Twig Scholarship award was given to Colleen Jones, Cranford High School, who will attend Ramapo College to study nursing. Ms. Jones was class president and a peer leader. She is a Girl Scout and has volunteered for the Care Alternative Teen Hospice.
The scholarships were announced at the Auxiliary’s annual award luncheon June 14 at RWJ Rahway. The Levitzky scholarship is named for a former auxiliary president who helped organize and fund a scholarship program for college-bound students pursuing careers in healthcare.
