Hospital Offers Firefighter Health & Wellness Course

For Immediate Release:

Rahway – Firefighting is one of the nation’s most dangerous occupations. In an effort to help keep firefighters safe, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway is presenting a firefighters’ health and wellness program on Saturday, February 9th at the RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center in Scotch Plains.

In addition to the perils of burns and smoke inhalation, firefighters also face a high risk of heart disease. The free wellness course, which runs from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, tackles this issue, offering topics such as cardiovascular risk factors for firefighters and how to implement a wellness program in local fire departments. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital created such a program with the Cranford Fire Department.

The program features Cranford firefighter Paul Schroeder, M.Ed., who is also the Health and Safety Instructor at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway; Nurse Kathy Conlon of the St. Barnabas Burn Center and Cranford Fire Department Captain Helge Nordveidt. All three are fire and hazardous material instructors. Robert Wood Johnson dietitian Stephanie Madeira will be there to discuss diet and exercise for firefighters.

The RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center is located at 2120 Lamberts Mill Road, Scotch Plains.

Open to volunteer and career firefighters, the program also offers cholesterol and blood glucose screening. Register by calling: (732) 499-6193.
