New Joint Replacement Center Offers
Unique Patient Experience

Rahway – Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway has opened The Joint Replacement Center, which offers the latest surgical and technological advances in knee and hip replacement. The center specializes in total and minimally invasive partial knee replacement as well as total and partial hip replacement. Other services include pain management, discharge planning and case management.

One of the guiding principles of the center is its focus on patient education, with teaching starting during the initial consultation and extending well after the patient is discharged. The center has both one-on-one education and learning opportunities through its unique pre-operative classes, where patients and family members learn about their upcoming surgery and what to expect during their hospital stay.

“When patients know what to expect before and after their procedures, they are more involved and motivated to achieve the best possible results,” said David Rojer, MD, the center’s medical director and a board-certified orthopedic surgeon practicing in Linden.

While the hospital has been offering knee and hip replacement surgery for years, this center provides a very different patient experience. As part of recovery, the center involves family or friends as “coaches” to help support and motivate. “Our patients heal alongside others with similar procedures and we track their progress on a special walking board to help improve outcomes,” said Dr. Rojer.

Rehab begins almost immediately after surgery. Patients use specialized equipment and work one on one and in group sessions with physical and occupational therapists who consistently receive praise from patients for their skill and ability to inspire. Patients may continue their therapy as outpatients. If needed, the center is affiliated with a subacute center on site for patient needing more help transitioning from hospital to home.
