RWJ Rahway Offers Digital Mammography,
Convenient Evening, Weekend Hours
Rahway – Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway now offers digital mammography, a more precise form of breast imaging that records and stores images on computer rather than film.
Several studies have shown that compared to film, digital mammography increases visualization of the fine detail of breast anatomy in younger women who typically have denser breasts, as well as pre- or perimenopausal women at any age, said Robert White, director of clinical services at RWJ Rahway.
The images produced by digital mammograms are easier for physicians to read because they can be magnified, rotated, and adjusted for brightness and contrast, White added. Another advantage of the Hologic digital technology purchased by the hospital is that it can be used to perform breast biopsies and localization procedures when needed.
In addition to a better picture, radiation exposure from digital mammography is lower. Radiation exposure from digital mammography is, on average, more than 20 percent lower than with film versions and digital exams take less time, as patients no longer need to wait for film images to be developed so technicians know if they are acceptable or new views are needed, White said.
The hospital offers digital mammography weekday hours, plus Thursday evenings until 7 pm and Saturdays from 9 am until 3 pm. To schedule an appointment, call 732-499-6299. Bone density screenings can be scheduled with a mammography.
