At the core of good health...Nutrition Counseling at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway Individuals may be referred by their physicians to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway Nutrition Counseling Program for Medical Nutrition Therapy which addresses the following:
Basic Nutrition
Cancer
Diabetes Mellitus
Eating Disorders
Food Allergies
Gastrointestinal Disorders
Heart Disease
Hyperlipidemia
Hypertension
Hypoglycemia
Pregnancy
Renal Failure
Weight Control & Reduction
Consultations Include:
- Evaluation of diet history and lifestyle practices
- Calculation of calorie and nutrient needs
- Development of an individualized care plan, which may include a specific meal pattern (using the American Diabetes Association Exchange List System and the American Heart Association Guidelines, as appropriate).
- Written educational materials
- Discussion of behavior modification techniques, including guidelines for food shopping, preparation and dining out
- Assessment of comprehension, receptivity and anticipated compliance
- Written summary of the counseling session provided to the physician, for referral and inclusion in the client’s medical record
How to Register
- A written prescription from the physician or Nutrition Counseling Referral Form is required. This should include the diet order, diagnosis, pertinent lab values and medications.
- The client should contact the Nutrition Department, 732-499-6210, in order to schedule an appointment. Early morning and evening appointments are available.
- Fees are based on an hourly rate and must be paid at the time of instruction. The session usually lasts about one hour. Follow-up sessions are also available at an additional cost.
- Clients are encouraged to contact their insurance carrier to determine if medical nutrition therapy is included in their coverage. Some managed care insurance companies also cover preventive services, including medical nutrition therapy. A referral form with a certification number must be obtained from the client’s primary physician and presented at the first counseling appointment.

Note: Follow-up visits are encouraged in order to achieve long-term compliance.
Registered Dietitians
The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway Nutrition Counseling and Education Service offers individual counseling and group classes which deal with a variety of nutrition-related health concerns.
Registered Dietitians (RD) provide all services. The RD certification assures the following professional qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree in nutrition, foods, food service management or related sciences, from a college or university approved by the American Dietetic Association.
- Dietetic internship or an equivalent planned experience approved by the American Dietetic Association.
- Registration status achieved through successful completion of a national examination.
- Continuing professional education required to maintain registration status.
