Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Symptoms and Treatments
Scotch Plains – How to manage lumbar spinal stenosis, a condition that can produce a pins and needles sensation in the thigh or legs after standing or walking, is the topic of a free educational program at the RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center in Scotch Plains.
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Symptoms and Treatments will be held Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 6:30 pm. The featured speaker is neurosurgeon Adam Lipson, MD of Union County Neurosurgical Associates and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway.
Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is caused by a gradual narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the nerve roots and spinal cord, causing pain and discomfort. Patients with LSS often notice pain in the buttocks or a pins and needles sensation in the thigh or leg that occurs when standing or walking. The discomfort is usually relieved by bending forward or sitting. In some cases, a patient will complain of leg pain and weakness without back pain. LSS is the most common reason for back surgery in people over the age of 65.
This free educational program will help patients understand their disease and how to manage their condition. LSS patients will learn about treatment options including: non-operative therapy, traditional surgery and a new minimally invasive technology.
To register for this program, please call 732-234-5670.
