Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) Diagnosis and Treatment

Scotch Plains – Cardiologist Sanjiv Prasad will speak about peripheral vascular disease (PVD) diagnosis and treatment at a free educational program at the RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center in Scotch Plains, Tuesday, April 7 at 6:30 pm.

This free program is open to everyone, you don’t have to be a member to partake. The Center is located at 2120 Lamberts Mill Road, Scotch Plains. To pre-register, please call 732-234-5670.

PVD refers to diseases of blood vessels outside the heart and brain. It's often a narrowing of vessels that carry blood to the legs, arms, stomach or kidneys. A common type of peripheral vascular disease is caused by structural changes in the blood vessels due to inflammation and tissue damage called peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD is caused by fatty buildups in arteries that block normal blood flow. These blockages restrict blood circulation. In its early stages a common symptom is cramping or fatigue in the legs during activity. Such cramping subsides when the person stands still. This is called "intermittent claudication."

People with PAD often have fatty buildup in the arteries of the heart and brain. Because of this association, most people with PAD have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, according to the American Heart Association.
