For Immediate Release:

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Scotch Plains – Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal causing a wide range of symptoms. Find out how this condition can be treated at a free program November 4, 2009 at the RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center.

The narrowing of the spinal canal puts pressure on the nerve roots and spinal cord. Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS ) often report a pins and needles sensation in the thigh or leg that occurs when standing or walking. The discomfort is usually relieved by bending forward or sitting. In other cases, patients report pains in their buttocks or leg pain and weakness without back pain. LSS, which is the leading reason for back surgery in the United States for people over 65, can result in limited activity and obesity.

The free program is presented by neurosurgeon Adam Lipson, MD, who also will explore the symptoms and diagnosis of LSS. The program begins at 6:30 pm at the RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center, 2120 Lamberts Mill Road in Scotch Plains. To register call 201-255-2070.

Dr. Lipson is affiliated with Union County Neurosurgical Associates and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway.
