For Immediate Release:

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
Topic of Latest RWJ Rahway Smackdown Series

Scotch Plains – Congestive heart failure (CHF) is one of the most common reasons for hospitalization and hospital readmissions. Marked by fatigue, shortness of breath and swelling of the feet and legs, it affects some five million people in the United States.

That’s why CHF and its symptoms are the topic of a special educational program for the community September 24 at the RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center in Scotch Plains.

Experts including a cardiologist, pulmonologist, pharmacist, dietitian, exercise physiologist and home care nurses will educate about the disease and the steps that can be taken to control symptoms. Breakout sessions offer personal attention regarding specific areas of symptom control.

Attendees will learn the myriad conditions that can contribute to CHF and the practical implications of a condition which occurs when the heart’s pumping action can’t meet the body’s needs. While there isn’t a cure for CHF, its symptoms can be controlled, as the panelists will explain.

This free program, which includes a heart healthy lunch, is hosted by the Department of Cardiology and the Nicholas Quadrel Healthy Heart Center for Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway.

The CHF Smackdown is the third in a series of popular Smackdown education series classes available from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway, the first two having dealt with chronic problems such as diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To register for the program call 732-499-6193. The RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center is located at 2120 Lamberts Mill Road, Scotch Plains.
