Founded in 1917, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway is an acute-
care community hospital providing a healthcare continuum to the communities it serves in Union and Middlesex counties.
The hospital’s services include 24 hour emergency care, hematology-oncology, critical care, cardiac care, including cardiac catheterization, telemetry, cardiac rehabilitation, stress testing and chest-pain emergency treatment. It has the full range of diagnostic services, as well as, neurology, surgery, pediatric emergency services and hospice care.
The hospital has gained renown in subacute care, acute long-term care and pain management services. A wound care center, balance center and community fitness center demonstrate the hospital’s ability to serve changing community needs.
Subacute Care
RWJUH Rahway has a specialized subacute care unit called Care Connection, designed to bridge the gap between hospital and home for the patient who is over the acute phase of illness but still needs medical care and rehabilitation.
Long-Term Acute Care
The hospital also is home to Kindred Hospital New Jersey-Rahway, a long-term acute-care hospital for medically complex patients with illnesses requiring a longer length of stay. Kindred is a ‘hospital within a hospital’ that cares for patients with pulmonary disease and provides acute ventilator weaning. It specializes in the treatment of patients with difficulty eating or swallowing, those who require IV therapy and patients with congestive heart failure or post-operative complications, such as infection, stroke or bleeding.

The Wound Care Center®
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway recently established the Wound Care Center® for the treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds. Associated with inadequate circulation, poorly functioning veins and immobility, non-healing wounds occur most frequently in people with diabetes and poor circulation. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway has partnered with Wound Care Centers Inc, the nation’s leader in wound management. Opened this summer, the Center’s outcomes are outstanding, with a better than 95 percent heal rate.
The SleepCare Center ™
This fall we opened the SleepCare Center with our partners SleepCare Center Inc. A sleep study at performed at our center will help your physician diagnose and treat your sleep problems. The test provides a comprehensive record of your sleep patterns, leg movements, blood oxygen levels, breathing, heart rhythm, and snoring. Results are evaluated by a sleep specialist, who forwards them to your personal physician, along with a diagnosis and recommendation for treatment.
The Center for Rehabilitation
The hospital is home to The Center for Rehabilitation, which provides comprehensive rehabilitation for a variety of impairments. The focus is on restoring and improving function in mobility, self-care, independence and quality of life. Services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language and dysphagia treatment, and audiology for both inpatients and outpatients. Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation program helps people with asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis regain function. In addition to traditional treatment, the hospital’s speech department is certified to provide VitalStim for patients with swallowing problems.
The Hospital’s Nicholas Quadrel Healthy Heart Center provides cardiac rehabilitation and maintenance programs, education and counseling that encourage and motivate patients to continue a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The Balance Center
For patients with balance disorders, vertigo and dizziness, The Balance Center diagnoses and treats using a specialized team made up of a physician, audiologist and physical therapists.
The Center for Healthy Lifestyles
Featuring the Diabetes Self-Management Center, an American Diabetes Association-recognized center that helps people control their disease and provide them with the skills, knowledge and motivation to stay healthy. The Center for Healthy Lifestyles provides group or customized weight-loss programs. Open to all who would like to lose weight, the program is especially beneficial for people who are obese, those with an immediate family member with diabetes, members of high-risk ethnic populations, as well as those with high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, or impaired glucose tolerance.
Hospice Care
With a 25 year history of care, RWJUH Rahway’s Hospice serves terminally ill patients with a full range of medical, nursing and support services, delivered in their homes.
Fitness & Wellness
The RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center in Scotch Plains has the latest fitness equipment, an aquatic center, plus challenging fitness classes and personal trainers. Its commitment to wellness includes classes and healthy cooking demonstrations led by medical professionals affiliated with RWJ Rahway. The Center provides experienced physical therapy that makes use of the aquatics center. Located at 2120 Lamberts Mill Road in Scotch Plains, the center has ample parking and includes the Muscle Maker Grill. Joint Replacement Center
The hospital's Joint Replacement Center was recently rated a top ten hospital in New Jersey by physicians. The center stresses pre and post education so patients know what to expect every step of the way. With an emphasis on early mobility and rehabilitation facilitated by both therapists and family members who serve as coaches, patients typically leave the hospital within three days of their surgery.
RWJ CareCenter
An urgent care center located in Garwood, the RWJ CareCenter provides non emergent care, as well as occupational medicine in a convenient location in the Kings shopping center. This walk-in care center requires no appointment and is open seven days a week.The center is staffed by physicians, nurses and techs and provides physicals for work, camp and school, in addition to vaccinations.
